Are you a yachtie interested in sailing the West Australian coastline? We aim to provide resources to help you explore the beautiful waters of Western Australia. We also document the exploits of our members and friends who are sailing the globe.
Formation
The Cruising Section was originally formed as the "Cruising-in-Company" Section in 1983, with the aim "to promote cruising
in company for the benefit of Members of Fremantle Sailing Club". The first organised cruise was to Two Rocks Marina in October of that year.
Want to Cruise in the company of more experienced sailors?
- Make contact with one of the members of the Cruising Committee.
- The planned cruises for the year are listed in the Event Calendar.
- We also conduct Topics Nights on the third Thursday of each month, again check out the calendar. These, besides
providing an opportunity to get to know some like minded sailors, cover a wide variety of subjects from how to
anchor safely and other safety issues to talks by cruisers who have made ocean passages and visited interesting
places in Australia and around the world.
Aims and Activity Plan
We aim to provide a structure that encourages members to achieve safe and enjoyable cruising. This is achieved by:
- Providing cruising opportunities that are:
- Safe, with risks identified and acted upon;
- Enjoyable;
- Undertaken by members who are adequately trained and equipped;
- Varied and challenging;
- In accordance with current regulations and community standards;
- Well planned and resourced.
The highlights of the current cruising calendar are the annual Quindalup Cruise, traditionally departing on
Boxing Day, the Bunbury Cruise in February, and the Abrolhos Cruise in April/May. Other cruises are scheduled
throughout the year, to enjoy lesser known destinations along our beautiful coastline. Because our weather can
sometimes be unpleasant, events in this program are subject to change.
- Providing opportunities to experience cruising in the broader community.
We extend our activities to helping others. We have been involved in beach clean-ups at Rottnest, taking Legacy
Camp kids on a day sail at Busselton and taking junior sailors to Mandurah for the weekend in parallel with the
Halls Head Race.
- Informing members about:
- Equipment required;
- Safety and risk management;
- Techniques employed;
- Experience of others;
- Regulatory compliance;
- Future directions;
- Seamanship;
- Design of craft;
- Maintenance options.
- Providing a social environment that embraces fellow cruisers.
On the third Thursday of each month there is a Topics Night. A meal in the Galley from 1800 - 1930 hours is
followed at 1930 by a presentation of a subject or voyage of interest to cruisers. Topics may range from local
and international cruising destinations to technical topics such as sail making and trim, anchoring techniques
and yacht maintenance. This evening is free for all members and their guests and is a great place to start
meeting fellow cruisers.
- Ensure good communications.
We currently communicate via:
- eNews and eLert email notices to all Cruising members. Subscribe online here;
- weekly FSC Around the Buoys emails;
- the Section notice board at the Club;
- this website;
- Blue Water Bulletin
- Provide access to archival information.
The Club Library has an excellent selection of books, magazines and videos; members can borrow items at no cost.
The Chart Room holds charts for most of Australia that are kept up to date. Our Cruising Section website is an
invaluable source of cruising information, much of it not found anywhere else on the internet.
