Fremantle Sailing Club is a members only club, (for membership details email Membership Officer), and is situated in the Harbour City of Western Australia known as Fremantle. Fremantle was and is the gateway to Australia/Western Australia when many European people came by ship and this has made Fremantle a cosmopolitan town with many restaurants, hotels and tourist sights. You can eat at numerous international eateries in Fremantle, including Fremantle Sailing Club.
This historic club held races between Cutters along the South Fremantle foreshore and the main Harbour from about 1879, and conducted the first ocean race in Western Australia from Mandurah to Bunbury in 1906.
The current club site was decided on in 1977 and covers 18 hectares of water and 6 hectares of reclaimed land.
It's 640 boat pens are provided with mains and wash-down water, power and telephones. Ample provision is made for slipping and lifting craft at reasonable cost, hardstand facilities for parking trailer boats, wash-down area, fuelling facility and boat ramps. For its members, the club offers a first floor a-la-carte dining room with magnificent views over Success Harbour to Garden and Rottnest Islands. The facility and food is first class and ideal for that special occasion, such as Wedding, Birthday or Anniversary, (members only) may email the House Manager.
The forth coming sailing programme includes the annual "P&O Ports Fremantle Harbour Classic", in Fremantle Harbour. Watch 30 large ocean going yachts battle for line honours in the confines of Fremantle Harbour, this is a spectators race for sailing enthusiasts and non-seaman alike. and supports the City of Fremantle's annually "Festival Fremantle", if you are in Fremantle don't miss it.
The Fremantle Sailing Club's annual Championship Regatta is held in March each year and gives sailors an opportunity to enjoy some class racing, in previous years saw the State Championships in several classes held during the Regatta, including Sharpies, Farr 9.2's, Farr 727's, Viking 30's and S&S 34's. If that's not enough the Club also has very competitive Inshore Racing, with a hectic programme during both spring/summer seasons starting with Opening Day in October and culminating with the Major Burns Trophy Race in March and an invitation Winter Series, (May to August), which has visiting yachts matched against Club members.
The Offshore Racing Section at Fremantle Sailing Club holds a variety of events in conjunction with the YAWA Offshore Calendar. The events hosted by Fremantle Sailing Club during a season include the 'Success Cup Series' (6 races of varying distances and destinations) during the spring/summer and the Valmadre Series during the winter. The competitiveness of visitors and Club members as they compete for these trophies makes for a great spectacle and even greater racing.
To encourage new members to Offshore Racing the section holds the Junior Invitation Weekend (The Halls Head and Point Robert Races) where Juniors over 14 are given berths on some of the top racing yachts in WA. 'They are encouraged to take part in the working of the yacht and many are offered regular crew positions from this event. For others interested in taking up this exhilarating sport the Club hold regular crew training programmes.
In addition to the coastal events, the Offshore Section conducts the 'Carnarvon Yacht Race', (a Blue Water event with YAWA,) bi-annually and the only International Race from Western Australian waters. Held every 4 years, there have been six races to Indonesia and two of those have been to the Island of Lombok.
The next race to a new destination has been held over due to international security threats. As the club has been host to the Whitbread Round The World Race this section also provides many support personnel to help with the smooth running of such a prestigious event.
If Offshore Racing is not your cup of tea why not join the section support group. The Offshore Race Control Team provides the back up needed to run races. On the job training is freely given and all help is welcome. Learn about radio coverage, starting and finishing, flags, safety and many other aspects of Race Management. The Cruising section is very popular and are also very active in the club, it's a great way to get away from it all. The highlight of their calender is the Quidalup Cruise which attracts large numbers of vessels including in recent years power yachts. They also have many other cruises including the annual cruise to Albany in South Western Australia.
Sailing is only a small feature of the activities which Fremantle Sailing Club Member enjoy. We also have a Power Yacht Section which meet for competitions and social activities on a regular basis. There is also a strong following for Angling and Game Fishing with these sections competing in various competition through Western Australia, Australia and the world with the premier Game Fishing Competition in Western Australia and arguably the premier national Game Fishing competition being held annually in March, "The Blue Marlin Classic". Traditionally this event attracts competitors from near and afar with record catches the order of the day.
Many member are involved behind the scene, with our Radio Section doing their bit to keep the waterways safe for all uses, they can be contacted on callsign VJ6LS and although essentially a members service they are only to please to hear from "boaties". Other sections include Duty Officers who greet visitors/guest and act as the ambassadors of the club.
The Social Section provide the entertainment and functions for members to enjoy, including "Fine Dining", Opening Day Celebration, Christmas Functions and many other functions, shows and events on the club's busy social calender. We even have our own Pipes and Drums band, they are well sought after to perform in parades and competitions and recently recorded a CD of their fine music, a copy of which is available from the club reception. So you can see what ever your interest is the Fremantle Sailing Club has something for everyone and since it was established more than one hundred years ago the past and present members have strived to make Fremantle Sailing Club one of the best clubs of it's kind.
We are proud to have as a member of the club 18 YEAR OLD SOLO ROUND THE WORLD YACHTSMAN "DAVID DICKS", who in 1996 returned to Fremantle having successfully sailed single handed nonstop around the world to become the youngest person to perform this incredible feat, WE SALUTE YOU DAVID.
Fremantle Sailing Club is an accredited Australian Yachting Federation Training Establishment, with Learn to Sail (TL1), Learn to Race (TL2), Small Boat Proficiency (TL3) and Offshore/Inshore Crew Training (TL6) courses being conducted throughout the year.
