The 2011 Club Marine Fremantle Harbour Classic was held on Sunday 17 November. The ideal conditions provided a spectacular display of close quarters sailing by a range of WA's best Inshore and Offshore sailors.
The 28 yachts in this unique pursuit race showed off their skills to the thousands of spectators lining the harbour wharves with a running commentary from the multi-talented Bernie Kaaks ably assisted by Tessa Parkinson, which was broadcasted on 89.1FM.
Whist the initial spinnaker sets were straightforward for most, the pressure of repeated packing and rehoisting took its toll. The gybes produced some creative results and there were more wine glasses than you'd see at the Somerville on a Saturday night! However, that just added to the wonderful show and it was a thrill for spectators to see the speed and manoeuvres of boats and crew, including the 63ft Limit as it hurtled around the harbour. Unfortunately, for Limit and for Wyuna their close encounter was enough to damage both yachts with Limit immediately retiring from the race.
At a package presentation at FSC later that day, the results were announced:
1st Place - Problem Child - Brian McMaster
2nd Place - The X Factor - Scott Glaskin
3rd Place - Max - Scot Olsen
Fastest - Knee Deep - Phil Childs
Thanks go to the sponsors and the busy 13 strong Race Control Team who monitored the multiple starts, roundings and the finish and to the Bosuns who were a huge help laying markes and lots of other jobs in the process. This is a fantastic event of which the Fremantle Sailing Club is very proud to host.
