COMPETENT CREW


Competent Crew builds on the basic skills learnt in the Introduction to Sailing Keelboats Course. 
The Competent Crew course is a stepping stone on the path leading to Inshore Skippers and higher
level yachting qualifications.

·         Boat Handling including:Hoisting sails, sail trim and reefing techniques

    • Mooring and departure From berth or mooring
    • Anchoring
    • Dinghy Handling
  • Learn simple engine checks and yacht handling under power (will be conducted in a small power boat).
  • Learn to steer –
    • Compass course both day and night
    • Through tacks and gybes
    • Adverse weather/sea/swell management.
    • Discuss night sailing techniques
  • Learn about ropes and sailing knots
    • Winch usage
    • Properties of rope, types, selection, rope terminology, safe-working load.
    • Securing ropes to fixed points
    • Coiling and care of ropes and sheets
    • Comprehensive knowledge on tying sailing knots
  • A more In depth look at the ‘Rules of the Road’
  • Learn about radio calls and advanced safety equipment on board
  • Emergency procedures

To participate in the Competent Crew course you must have first completed the Introduction to Sailing Keelboats course.

What to bring:  Pair of shoes and spray jacket

Pre-requisite:  Introduction to Keelboats, Participant must be able to swim
