Introduction to Yacht Racing


Yacht racing is a complex game at all levels.  During the 12 hour mix of practical and classroom instruction sailors will be introduced to the knowledge and skills desirable in a valued racing crew member.

The course will include

  • An introduction to the terminology of yacht racing and the specific equipment required on board a racing yacht.
  • Preparation of a vessel for racing.
  • Explanation and practice of typical crew roles and areas of responsibility with emphasis upon the importance of a coordinated team approach to yacht racing and safe working procedures.
  • Steering skills sail handling and the basic aspects of sail trim as part of the sequences and timing of basic racing manoeuvres.
  • Sail handling, reefing, head sail changing and the use and handling of spinnakers in a racing situation
  • An introduction to the racing rules of sailing
  • Starting procedures and control of boat speed.
  • The basic tactics of club racing.ยท         An introduction to practical wind observation, modifications to local winds and the importance of accurate forecasting
  • Racing in strong winds.

Pre-requisite:  Learn to Sail Keelboats course or equivalent prior knowledge.  Participant must be able to swim.
