The Handicaps
The Fremantle Harbour Classic is conducted as a “Pursuit Race” with the smallest yachts starting first and the bigger faster yachts starting behind them.
The goal is to get all the fleet to finish as close as possible so the 30 yachts all converge towards the finish line at once making for an exciting climax.
Each yacht is handicapped and given a fall time based on the yacht performance assessed by the handicappers who are given the vital stats on the yachts size, weight, sail area, beam and so forth which affects the on water speed of the yacht.
The fall time is when the yacht can cross the start line in front of the Museum and not before, giving a staggered start effect.
