Introduction to Keelboats

The Introduction to Sailing Keelboats Course covers the basic operation of a keelboat. It assumes no prior knowledge of sailing and is ideal for a novice or someone who has previous experience in dinghies or off-the-beach catamarans.

Students who complete the course will have sufficient experience and knowledge to begin crewing on a keelboat in races or on cruises.

The course covers:

  • Boat Knowledge:
    • Rigging and De-rigging a yacht.
    • Terminology of a yacht.
    • How a yacht sails.
  • Basic Boat Handling under sail:
    • Setting and trimming sails.
    • Working on deck.
    • Helming (steering).
    • Tacking and Gybing.
    • Sailing under different wind and sea conditions.
    • Leaving and returning to a pen or mooring.
  • Basic Seamanship:
    • Roles and responsibilities of the skipper and crew.
  • Basic Rules of the Road

The Introduction to Keelboats course consists of 12 hours of training. Sessions of 4 hours duration are held over three consecutive weekends. These sessions are mainly practical but contain some theory.

Please check the current training timetable for dates and times. The course assumes no prior knowledge. There is no formal assessment for the course.

At the completion of the course students will be given a logbook so that they can start to record their sailing experience.
