Get Into Small Boat Sailing - Racing Skills Level 1

The aim of this course is to introduce sailors to competitive sailing. The course focuses on refining enhanced boat handling skills including speed control and manoeuvres and introducing participants to basic racing tactics and strategies.    

You will receive a Racing Skills 1 Certificate and the ability to apply your knowledge and skills to competitive situations in moderate to fresh conditions.

Syllabus:

1. Prepare and Plan
  • Basic Fitness Principals
  • Sailing Stretches
2. Sailing Techniques and Manoeuvres
  • Demonstrate enhanced boat speed control
  • Basic starting procedures
  • Identify line bias
  • Perform starts in accordance with flags / sound signals
  • Windward and leeward mark roundings
  • Enhanced boat handling skills to maintain or enhance speed and balance in gusty (moderate to fresh) conditions when sailing upwind and downwind
3. Sailing Theory and Background
  • Basic aerodynamic theory (how sails work)
  • Methods of sail power control
  • Teamwork
  • Use racing rules in a racing situation
  • Rule 10 - on opposite tacks
  • Rule 11 - on the same tack, overlapped
  • Rule 12 - on the same tack, not overlapped
  • Rule 13 - whilst tacking
  • Rules 18.1 and 18.2 - passing marks and obstructions
  • Rule 29.1 - on the course side at the start
  • Rules 31.1 and 31.2 - touching a mark
  • Identify common race course configurations
  • Identify race / regatta scoring systems
  • Identify major components of a race and their potential to effect outcome of the race
4. Winds, Tides and Currents
  • Identify wind-shift types and patterns including geographic, oscillating and persistent wind shifts
  • Identify sea breeze and land breeze patterns
