This course introduces sailors to the compass and also to the concept of 'tuning'.
You will receive a Racing Skills 2 Certificate and will be equipped with and aware of the broad range of fundamental skills required to prepare for and compete in a race series.
Syllabus:
1. Prepare and Plan:
- Identify and demonstrate physical preparation techniques for sailing
- Awareness of physical preparation for injury prevention and performance enhancement
- Basic planning practices including goal setting, training session planning, time management and recording / diarising understood
2. Sailing Techniques and Manoeuvres:
- 'Blind' and/or rudderless sailing
- Demonstrate an attempt to maintain optimal power in the rig
- Oversheeting and undersheeting identified and corrected while racing
- Enhanced boat handling skills to maintain or improve speed and balance in gusty (moderate to fresh) conditions when sailing upwind or downwind in racing situations
3. Sailing Theory and Background:
- Basic tactics and wind strategy utilised including identification of the wind-favoured side of the course, wind shifts and offensive positioning of the boat in relation to others on the course
- Awareness of the compass as a tool to determine start line bias, wind favoured side of the course and wind shift patterns
4. Winds, Tides and Currents:
- Wind shift types and patterns including geographic, oscillating and persistent wind shifts identified
- Prevailing wind shifts and patterns identified and utilised to sail the boat to best advantage in racing situations
