Ladies Day in the Wardroom
By Anne Hector

Being the middle month of the autumn season, April was a perfect time to have a speaker whose topic was garden design now and in the future. Joe Bovell gave us all an insight into what we might do with our gardens if we had both the time and the money, his presentation included photos of many beautiful designs from the recent Melbourne Garden Exhibition.

Our guest speaker for June will be Jo Beers, a Nutritionist, Freelance Writer and Co Editor of the new WA magazine “Flourish”. Jo has been involved in the food and nutrition industry for nearly 20 years. She also has an honours degree in Nutritional Sciences in the UK, specialising in nutrition and the immune system. Over the years she has helped hundreds of clients to achieve their health and weight goals through a series of personal, group and corporate programs. Working closely with her medical husband, Dr Trevor Beer, Jo brings the latest scientifically proven nutritional medicine to her clients to enable them to gain optimum health. She is also author of “Revitalise – invigorating recipes for increased vitality”. Jo regularly contributes to newspapers such as the Sunday Times, Body and Soul, The West Australian as well as other media such as ABC Radio and 92.9/94.5 FM.

In July we will welcome June Butcher AO to FSC. June is the founder and chairman of Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. The centre is a not-for-profit organization committed to the protection and welfare of native wildlife. Since its inception the centre has more than doubled its capacity to meet the rehabilitation needs of wildlife admitted from the local community. Kanyana is run entirely by volunteers. In 2005 it won both State and National awards in the National Bank Volunteer Awards.

For those of you who were not present at our April lunch, I would like to advise that after four years it has been necessary to increase the cost of the lunch, the new price will be $24.50. I am sure you will all agree that this still represents excellent value for money, and where else in Perth can you have such a delicious lunch with a wonderful view, good friends and interesting guest speakers.
