Terry Fisher Race 6 and Overall Results
By Isabel Law

Race 6 was the last one of the Terry Fisher Double Handed and Women’ s Fleet Division Series. With a very light north easterly, boats struggled to even make it to the start line on time. It took the fleet about 2 hours to reach Mewstone Day Buoy where the officials onboard Lee Lena was awaiting for the yachts with a shortened course flag up, and a finish at Mewstone. By then a light sea breeze was in, which gave the sailors a chance to sail back to the club for the presentations.

Terry Fisher’s sister Michelle, and her husband Ezio, flew from Fitzroy to attend the presentations and it was great to meet them. Three years younger and only sister to Terry, she admits that unlike her brother, she is not really into sailing but recalls a funny story.

Some years ago, Terry invited them to join a Rockingham race. Ezio asked Terry how long was the race. Terry answered ‘3 slabs’. By the time they got to Rockingham, the beers were all gone . He then asked Terry why they didn’t race first and then have a drink?

He answered that they tried that one once and came dead last so they gave the idea away. Then on the way back, the weather was a little bit stronger and a concerned Michelle asked if the water ever came from the back of the boat but Terry reassured her that no, the water never came on the boat from the back and that everything would be alright and he would look after his younger sister.

However, as the wind blew up, the spinnaker blew out and water was all over the deck. At the end of the day, Michelle who didn’t like sailing to begin with, vowed to herself that it would be her last time on a yacht!

The series was once again a success with a great number of boats participating in the double-handed divisions. The women’s fleet division was again a little weak in number this year but organisers will keep promoting this division to encourage more women to learn about the sport.

A big thank you to Kim Jamieson who works tirelessly all year toward the series. A special thanks to Peter Quartermaine and the start team onboard Lee Lena, and all our sponsors Vic Sail WA, Garry Martin Boat Paint and Club Marine for their great support.
