Welcome to the Junior & Dinghy Racing Section of Fremantle Sailing Club. It is our goal to support your sailing through the use of our facilities, initial training, and ongoing coaching and support so that you achieve your goals in sailing whether you aspire to go to the Olympics or whether you are just happy to enjoy the pleasures that just being on the water can bring.
We sail six different international one-design classes – Optimists, Mirrors, 420’s, 29ers, Lasers and 505’s. This is done so that, as sailors develop their skill, they can compete on the very highest level if they want to. The Optimist and the Laser are single-handed dinghies, whilst the Mirrors, 420’s, 29ers and 505’s require a skipper and a crew.
Racing is conducted on Saturday mornings for the junior classes and Saturday afternoons for the senior classes. Detailed information regarding racing is available in the Club’s Sailing Handbook. Ongoing training is available on most sailing days plus specialised training is planned throughout the year.
Sailors are encouraged to participate in Inter-Club, State, National and International events with travel grants being provided to help with costs where it is considered appropriate. The Club also participates in inter club Teams Racing and Match Racing for which teams are chosen from the ranks of our dinghy sailors.
The Summer Season commences in October and continues every Saturday through to April. 505’s, Lasers, 29ers and 420’s race on Saturdays commencing at 1400hrs. Optimists and Mirrors race on Saturday 1000hrs. The Huck Scott Winter Series is held on Saturdays fortnightly between June and September.
The Club has many social events with BBQ’s after racing on most sailing days. Parents are encouraged to sail with their children, or if they wish to take part in another way there is always race control, manning the support boats or helping out in the Galley. All these are ways that enable sailing to be an experience for the whole family.
The Junior & Dinghy Racing Section meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 1900hrs in the Junior Clubhouse. Enquires are welcome and should be directed to the Dinghy Captain Nick Jerwood.
