The first serious race of the season saw eighteen boats take to the water last Saturday. A ten-knot breeze from the west created ideal conditions for skippers and crew to dust off their skills following the long hiatus after the winter series. A pyrocumulus cloud over the hills was a reminder of the warming season.
The 49th Geraldton Ocean Classic started last weekend. Traditionally, the Fremantle to Geraldton is a 221nm downwind race, where the fleet hoist their spinnakers and surf all the way to Geraldton. Boats compete for the fastest time, and this race is the first race in the prestigious Bluewater Siska Trophy series.
