Adventures of Nia and Monique

Kiel Week 2017

By Nia Jerwood

Monique and I have just spent the past week competing in the 470 at Kiel Woche, Germany. The regatta is amongst the biggest sailing events in the world, with sailors from all around the globe competing in Olympic, Paralympic and youth classes. We spent the week living in an air bnb house, 2 minutes from the club with a group of Australian 470 sailors. As you can imagine we had an amazing time on and off the water.

The regatta consisted mostly of windy races with rain clouds bringing strong wind and shifty conditions to the racecourse. Monique and I found our speed in the wind and used this to place consistently in the front part of the fleet. We arrived at the regatta with plenty of goals and areas in which to improve, these had been highlighted from our recent trip to the European Championships in Monaco. Monique and I had a short but productive time working with our coach Belinda out of FSC, between the two regattas.  We learnt a lot during the course of Kiel Week, improving our down wind speed and positioning. We finished the medal race in 6th position and out of the 19 boats competing we finished in fifth overall.

Kiel week has set us up well as a lead into our World Championships, which start on the 10th of July in Thessaloniki, Greece. We are expecting the fleet to be much tougher, and with 60 boats entered at the Worlds it will be a great opportunity for us to test our skills and see where we fit on the world scale. A big shout out to Fremantle Sailing Club for their continuing support and for sharing our Facebook posts, we can’t wait to get back out on the home waters off South Beach!
