Weekend Fishing Competition May 11

With two regular crews absent, it was heartening to introduce several new members to the monthly weekend competition on May 11. Goran and Marcus Sucur had other commitments, while Tania Coppola and Iain Grassick also couldn’t wet a line because Iain had a singing engagement. So, welcome aboard new members Phil Giambazi and Chris Walkey, who signed up on the Open Day in March, and fished with Phil’s son Andre.

And the “firsts” didn’t stop there in the comp which featured six boats and 15 anglers.History tells us that Denise Bech is not only a passionate footy tipster but also an avid angler who outscores hubbie John – the Angling Captain – most times they put to sea.Well, John extracted his revenge by finally turning the tables and amassing more points than his wife – 46.83 to 42.17 — on a day when the nor-easter whipped up some white caps early in the day before abating before noon.

But as it was the day before Mother’s Day, it was fitting that Denise won the mystery fish with a swallowtail caught at Rottnest, and with it, $110 towards her House Support. So even when John won, the bragging rights remained in dispute.It was a dramatic weigh-in because no angler provided a bumper haul in the competitionthat produced some nice sand whiting, herring galore, skippy –Craig’s 1.1kg fish was the biggest – squid, Samson fish and king george.

Aside from the swallowtail, the star attraction, though, stood out like a white pointer at Beatty Park – Sue’s 0.94 king george caught east of the Stragglers. Fishing with husband Pat and Ray Wilson, Sue also landed some nice herring, sandies and a skippy. Ray got much the same haul while Patty found there was a lot of water between the fish! The trio’s day was made all the better at the last drop, nor-east of Mewstone where the water was a little dirty but that didn’t deter four curious squid coming out of the weed to examine the baits being reeled in. The biggest, caught by Ray, weighed 0.88kg, while the others were a reasonable size. Ray won the comp with 66.04 points, just pipping Sue by 1.36 points and Joe by 3.28 points.
