KEELBOAT COURSE | Learn to Sail at Fremantle Sailing Club

Our Keelboat Crew and Helm Courses are aimed at the first time sailor. These courses are open to the public and after completing this course, many sailing opportunities at FSC will be available to you. FSC Keelboat courses are endorsed by Australian Sailing and are an ideal way to learn to crew or helm a yacht.

  • $400 for 25 hours tuition and Australian Sailing Handbook and Logbook
  • All equipment is supplied
  • Five Sunday Mornings from 8:30am to 1:30pm 

Skills acquired on our course include:

Start Crewing

•    Safety equipment, clothing and safe practices
•    Basic knowledge of sailing terms, identifying parts of the boat – rigging and sails
•    Basic knowledge of the use of sheets, halyards, winches, clutches, mooring lines and cleats
•    Understanding the theory and basic principles of sailing including tacking and gybing
•    Wind awareness
•    Man Overboard
•    Rules of the road

Start Helming

•    Sail handling, rigging and ropework – prepare the sails and rig the boat
•    Reefing and shaking out reefs whilst underway
•    Helm and trim sails effectively on all points of sail
•    Helm effectively a triangular course
•    An introduction to meteorology
•    Emergency situations
•    Anchoring

The Course

This is a recognised course giving you a nationally recognised Australian Sailing qualification,  certificate, theory book and logbook.
The course provides 25 hours of training conducted on board Airborn, the club’s SB20 keelboat used for our learn to sail courses and provides the option of crewing on one of our member’s boats or Crewing/Racing on our SB20 Sportsboats.
