Discover Sailing Pathway

Sailing Pathways

Fremantle Sailing Club offers a structured program based on the national program from Australian Sailing working with the beginner through to the elite level.  Participants are nurtured through the various levels by highly-skilled Instructors and Coaches. With regular assessments, an individual’s progression is based on their personal achievements and ability.

School Holiday Kids Learn to Sail Courses

These programs as suggested are run over each school holiday block and consist of 5 morning’s down the club learning to sail in the club’s fleet of plastic optimist’s. These courses are a great way for kids to learn to sail as there is less time in between lessons for the kids to forget what they learnt previously. To find out more about the kids school holiday courses and to see the dates of the next courses please follow this link.

Bronze Fleet

The bronze fleet program is designed for those kids who have done a school holiday course to progress further through the program towards silver fleet, or for those that don’t have the patience to wait for the next school holidays. This Saturday morning program caters for sailors from the complete beginner to those that are advancing on to silver fleet and club racing. To find out how to get involved in the bronze fleet at Fremantle Sailing Club please contact Travis Burtenshaw our Dinghy Administrator at dinghyadmin@fsc.com.au

Silver Fleet

This weekend program allows children who have completed bronze fleet to continue practising their skills and participating in racing under the watchful eye of on of our Qualified Club Coaches. Sessions are conducted in privately owned or Club leased boats. To find out about silver fleet, where your child fits in to the progfram or how to lease one of our club optimists please contact Travis Burtenshaw our Dinghy Administrator at dinghyadmin@fsc.com.au

Gold Fleet

The Gold Fleet continues to develop the skills fostered in the Silver Fleet program and supports children to develop their racing skills to a high state, national or even international level. Children range in age from 10 – 17 years but inclusion in this fleet is dependent on sailing ability rather than age. Fremantle has a proud history of producing some of Australia’s best sailors out of the Optimist Gold Program.

State, National and International Competition

Racing at State, National or International level is conducted in many classes of dinghies. At Fremantle Sailing Club we encourage sailors to sail within one of the following classes to open up the scope for competition. The classes sailed are the International Optimist, International Mirror, International 420, Bic Techno 293 Sailboard, International 470, International Laser and Tasar.

Inshore and Offshore Sailing

Once sailors become competent at Gold Fleet level and aged about 15 an alternate path to continuing in dinghies is to join the crew of a “big” boat. Many teenagers sail in the Offshore fleet.

WAIS Elite Program & YWA State Sailing Team

Sailors achieving high level placings at State and National events may be considered for selection by the W.A. Institute of Sport Sailing Development Squad and the YWA State Sailing Team. These squads are designed to train and support sailors into the highest levels of competition including World Championships and the Olympic Games.
