An Invitation from the Committee Chair

Fremantle Sailing Club has been staging a ‘Bali’ race since 1981, so we have a great history with those who have sailed in the event citing not only the racing challenges of the event, but also the superb camaraderie amongst sailors and families that simply can’t be beaten.

Some of the early races ended in Lombok, but in more recent years we have had a finish line just off the entrance to Benoa Harbour.

We intend to always have Benoa as the finish line followed by a Beyond Bali Rally.

Over the years, FSC has attracted hundreds of yachts into one of Australia’s longest blue water races on the Australian yachting calendar which at a distance of 1440 nautical miles is more than twice the distance of the Sydney to Hobart Race.

The early race record of six days 15 hours was set by the legendary West Australian yachtsman, Rolly Tasker in his bright red yacht, Siska IV. It then took thirty years – until 2011 – for Alan Brierty’s yacht Limit to set the new race record of 6 days and 5 hours.

The challenge was therefore set once again and in 2013 another local racer, the late Tony Mitchell, chartered the Super maxi, Nicorette, renamed it Super Sled, and took out Line Honours in a fraction under six days. In fact it was Tony in describing some of the adventure and allure of the event who said not only did he want to knock off the race record but he also only wanted to sail to exotic places where palm trees grew.

With the next Fremantle to Bali event starting on Saturday May 6, 2017 there is plenty of time to plan and to prepare yourselves and your yachts and to enter. And with two divisions and several classes and coveted trophies for various sections in each division there’s plenty of competition and a great adventure waiting.

An exciting event that continues to create challenging off shore sailing and alluring on shore socialising with celebrated memories the reward.

In the continuing evolution of our fantastic blue water race and post-race activities the 2017 event will include three separate events.

  • The long established Freo to Bali Race.
  • The Freo to Bali Rally
  • The Beyond Bali Rally/Cruise

Fremantle Sailing Club is keen to have sailors compete in one or another of the yachting events and will provide assistance as needed and a safe, well organised event followed by an exciting array of on shore and off shore events to be enjoyed by sailors , friends and families.

And if you need more incentive then try to think of a better destination to sail to than the exotic location of Bali leaving behind our Perth winter for the sun and sandals of a tropical island.

With this event skippers and crews are lured by thrilling racing, exotic landfalls, Balinese celebrations and the post-event option of enticing tropical cruising which sees boats cruise-in-company through the Indonesian Archipelago before returning to Australia. The return to northern Australian shores also offers breathtaking cruising along our world famous Kimberley coast before boats make berth in their home port.

We invite and urge you to join us.
