Sailing Pathways

Fremantle Sailing Club aims to provide a structured Academy program derived from international, national and Australian Sailing schemes. Programs run for beginners through to the elite levels.

Participants are assisted to work through each level by skilled instructors and coaches delivering a dynamic curriculum ensuring an exemplary program of sailing development activities. Regular assessments are key to provide an individual progression path based on their personal achievements and ability.

Fremantle Sailing Club has a commitment to growing our sport and is proud of the role that it plays in introducing current and future generations into the sailing community. 

Our Sailing Academy vision is to be a world best practice training facility and Australian Sailing accredited training organisation providing courses for beginners through to international level. 

The Sailing Academy supports all its sailors, weather their ambitions are next Olympic gold medalist like FSC academy sailor Matt Wearn. Many of our young sailors are extraordinarily successful in international competitions like Harry Joyner (IQ Foil) who recently placed second at the Youth European championships, and Stefan Elliott Shircore (ILCA 7) who just placed second at the 2023 U21 European Championships in Norway.

Junior Fleets (Ages 6-15)

Green Fleet

Once a sailor has completed a Learn to Sail course at FSC or another club they and their parents are invited to join our most Junior Fleet.
They will gain access to more coached training and skills development as well as the beautiful facilities.
Green fleet members can access Club-owned Optimists during their training. In Green Fleet sailors will develop foundational skills and learn how to sail around a basic course.

Intermediate Fleet

Once sailors progress from the Green Fleet and purchase their own boat for racing, they become part of Team Freo.
Team Freo has a long legacy as a strong team with many champions of the sport coming from its ranks.
In this group sailors will start to participate in Club racing and sail their own fiberglass Optimist.
The intermediate fleet designed to prepare sailors for the move to more advanced Open Fleet. The mission is for sailors to gain self-reliance and acquire the skills needed to become a successful fleet sailor at local regattas.

Open Fleet

Sailors in this group focus on developing and refining critical boat-handling, physical and mental stamina, and skills needed to excel in national and international competitions.
Expanding what they learnt in the Intermediate Fleet program.

Longer practices in a wide range of wind and ocean conditions combined with workouts demand high levels of maturity, focus and dedication.

Open Fleet sailors will also be developing team racing skills.


State, National and International Competition

Youth Classes (Ages 15-23)

The Youth classes sailed at the club are ILCA4, ILCA6, 29ers and IQ Foil

Once a sailor is ready to transition out of their junior class, they have many different options to choose from for their youth sailing.

It’s important to remember that this choice is not forever and moving between all the different types of boats is both normal and good for building a well-rounded knowledge of sailing.

Senior Classes (Ages 23+)

The senior class racing are the ILCA7, ILCA 6, OK Dinghy, 505 , SB20 and IQ Foil (Wind Foiling).

Many of these sailors proudly represent Fremantle Sailing Club at both National and International Competition.

Keelboat Racing

Once sailors become competent at Open Fleet level and aged about 15 an alternate path to continuing in small boat (dinghies) is to join the crew of a keel boat.

Many teenagers sail on keelboats in a wide variety of formats short inshore course racing, team match racing and long offshore races.


WAIS Sailing Program partnership

WAIS

Fremantle Sailing Club is proud to have a working partnership with WAIS, which has been successful over numerous years.

Sailors achieving high level placings at State and National events may be considered for selection by the W.A. Institute of Sport and Australian Sailing Youth and Pre-Emerging program.

These squads are designed to train and support sailors into the highest levels of competition including World Championships and the Olympic Games.
