Nia Jerwood & Monique de Vries secure their place in the Tokyo Olympic Games

AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES FREMANTLE SAILING CLUB SAILORS NIA JERWOOD AND MONIQUE DE VRIES WILL BE COMPETING IN THE TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES.

Nia and Monique have been competing on the world stage and training long hours in Perth, Sydney and Queensland, working towards earning their place to compete at the Tokyo Olympic Games in August this year. The girls placed 9th at the 2019 470 World Championships in Japan, qualifying the nation a place to compete at the Olympic Games and then went on to finish 2nd at the Enoshima Japan Sailing World Cup.

Being selected for the Olympics has been a dream of mine for a long time. I have been extremely fortunate to be able to develop as an athlete at Fremantle Sailing Club. I am where I am now largely due to the amazing support I have received from the club, and it’s community”, Jerwood said.

Both girls grew up sailing in Perth and have done many hours in the 470 training off Fremantle with Western Australian Institute of Sport Coach, Olympic gold medalist Belinda Stowell. Nia and Monique are currently over in Sydney training with the Australian Sailing Team in preparation for the European Championships in Portugal in May. They are planning to return back to Perth in early June before flying to Enoshima for their final training camp before the Olympic Games, 23 July to 8 August 2021. The Club will be organising a congratulations and send off evening in June to wish them all the best in Japan.

The members and the Board of Fremantle Sailing Club are extremely proud to have three athletes competing at the Olympic Games, Nia Jerwood and Monique De Vries in the 470 together with Matt Wearn in the Laser Class. Since 2000, the Club has had representation at the Olympic Games and are thrilled to see the girls selected for 2021”, complements Ron Greer, Fremantle Sailing Club Commodore.
